INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2024

International Women’s Day 2024 was celebrated on Friday 8 March by several of the DEA Ministries.  Here are some of the events that took place –

St Mary’s College

St Mary’s College has a proud 155-year tradition of empowering young women through several initiatives, one of which is International Women’s Day.

Our SRC team coordinated several events this week to celebrate this significant day. A highlight was a whole school picnic lunch on the Veritas lawns, where the Vocal Trio and Small Jazz Combo entertained us. Students and staff dressed in purple or as an inspiring woman they admire. Grounds 4 Change sold drinks, and our SRCs sold gingerbread biscuits made by our Year 9 and 10 students. All gingerbread and purple ribbons proceeds will be donated to Catherine House.

Our Little Sprouts playgroup celebrated International Women’s Day on Wednesday morning. Accompanied by our Year 12 child studies students, the group had fun taking part in nature play, parachute games, and discovering dinosaurs.

Our student leaders also had the opportunity to attend the 2024 Adelaide IWB Breakfast, held at the Convention Centre and hosted by Senator Penny Wong with guest speaker Annabel Crabb. Ms Crabb spoke at length about the history of incredible South Australian women and their impact on Australia’s political and economic landscape. The girls thoroughly enjoyed networking with other schools and industry partners.

Siena College

The Siena College Student Representative Council (SRC) hosted the annual International Women’s Day breakfast.

College alumna, Professor Dorota Gertig (Class of 1980) was welcomed back to the College as the guest speaker for the event. Professor Gertig shared invaluable insights from her remarkable journey beyond Siena, particularly emphasising her impactful contributions as a distinguished public health physician and epidemiologist. Her words resonated deeply, reminding the Siena community that true success is not merely a product of chance but rather a result of relentless hard work, unwavering commitment and the courage to forge ahead despite any fears or obstacles.

All proceeds raised from this event went towards supporting the women of the Kopanang Community in South Africa, celebrating their courage, wisdom and joy, which is infused into the work they do, products they make, knowledge they share and resilience they have.
